093 - Area: The Ruins of Mendark

When things get creepy, you gotta move fast. If you slow down, that just let’s whatever it is set the terms of engagement. Moving quickly might trigger action, but at least it will be action on your own terms.

— from the Journal of Edward Charwright,
25th of Harvestmoon, 3327

The town of Mendark is obviously dead. Most buildings have breaks in their walls, some are collapsed, and in many places the earth itself has been torn up, as if something under the ground were unearthed. Throughout the town, there are patches of faintly glowing green mist, and if someone stops in one place long enough, some of the nearby patches of mist will begin to drift toward them.

Findings

Detect Magic - The clouds of mist are magical, with a strong necromantic feel. In the heart of each cloud, detecting magic reveals a glowing symbol that is unknown to all party members, but seems like it is the same symbol that was on the undead minotaur’s foreheads.

Easy Perception Check - In one quarter of the town, destruction is nearly total, and it looks like some sort of large stone object or building (Entry 094) has pushed its way up through the floor of the cavern. In that area, the mist is particularly dense, and atop the stone structure there is a glowing green light.

Medium Perception Check - On the far side of the town, through the downside gatehouse and into the Nexus Corridor that leads onward, there is some sort of pulsing green light. (Entry 095)

Medium Tracking Check - There are many minotaur tracks, suggesting that they have been instrumental in looting the town, and possibly in taking its inhabitants. Many of the tracks that can be found lead toward the beacon atop the stone object. (Entry 094)

Allowing the Green Mist to Touch a PC - It has no immediate harmful effects, but it feels bad, almost as if it is somehow coating the parts of those it touches with slime. For every 10 minutes a PC allows it to touch or envelop them, they lose some life energy. It is clear that allowing one to envelop you would kill you, just very slowly.
